Question:

How do I get a smoke smell out of my couch?

My husband and I are newly married. The apartment that the couch has been in (my husband's) was smoked in before my husband moved in, and he has lived there about 6 months. We cleaned the place really well before moving in (and painted and steam-cleaned the carpets), and we are both non-smokers, but the apartment still smells bad. Now we are moving to a new house, but can't afford to get new furniture. I don't want to take the smoke smell with me, but I can't afford to get the furniture professionally cleaned.

I heard that you should spray the furniture (its a couch and chair) with a mixture of water and white vinegar, but I'm afraid that will stain my couch (its darker colored). Does anyone know if vinegar will stain, or have any other ideas that would work? I don't want to use febreeze, because I really don't think it will work.

Thanks for reading my question and thanks for any advice!!

  1. clean it really really well then rub baking soda into it

worked in the car we just got...shockingly well

  2. Febreeze is awesome, i'm sure it will take the smell away...(sounds like you might need the whole bottle! lol!)

  3. Try Febreeze...I've used it myself with very good results.

  4. If the couch is made out of a fabric, like a cloth material, get a carpet cleaner.

    They're not that expensive.

And I don't think vinegar will stain your couch.

But the smell of vinegar and cigarettes probably won't mix very well..

  5. steam the couches while spraying disinfectant on it?

  6. febreeze does work

  7. ~~My daughter had the same problem and also tried all the things you've done. Then she rented a Rug Doctor from Home Depot ($25 for 24 hours) and it comes with furniture attachments. She steamed hers and not only did it look new again, but all the cigarette odor came out.~~
