Question:

How do I get a tax file number to work in Australia?

Apparently to get a job in Oz you need a tax file number and an Australian bank account. How do I go about getting these? I don't want to go through a company who will wack a load of charges on doing it for me.

Is there a way of setting it all up without a permanent address?!

Any help gratefully recieved! Cheers.

  1. do you have a work permit to allow you to work in australia?

  2. go to the ato website or call them up and talk to someone.

  3. first you need a visa to work here, then go to the Australian tax office to have a number issued to you, they only give it once & it is yours for life, but no fixed address no bank account, also not a resident/long term stay in Australia, no bank account

    visit http://www.immi.gov.au

  4. If you open a bank account within the first 6 weeks of your arrival in Australia you only need your passport but if you wait longer than the 6 weeks you will have to make up the full 100 point system.. Either way it won't be too difficult.  http://www.immi.gov.au/living-in-austral...

As for a Tax File number;  you can get it on-line on apply in writing.  It's pretty straight forward, you will not need to hire someone to do it for you.  http://www.ato.gov.au/

  5. You can possibly do it online ... but usually you get a TFN form from the company when they have given you a job. As for a bank account - contact one online and see how they feel about it. You will need 100 points of ID. Again, you'd be better able to do that here. Is there an Australian bank near you wherever you are?

  6. Don't worry, the whole is designed to be a quick and simple procedure.  You can apply for a Tax File #  on line or you just fill them out and send them in, they will issue you a tax file number within days.  You don't have to have a permanent address, but you will need a mailing address.  Go to this site for full information; You will need certain documents though and they are listed on the following website:  http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/conten...

As for opening a bank account, we have a point system.  You need to make up 100 points. Your licence for instance is about 50 points and your passport is quite a few as well.  You can open a bank account without a tax file number, but if you do you will be charged 50% interest any interest made, you can always open the account and when you get your tax file number, just submit it to them.

  7. You do not really need a tax file number, but without it your employer has to withhold maximum tax from you. Your employer should be able to help you, Talk about employment within Australia visit your nearest embassy or consulate, or visit the Taxation office website.
