How do I get a title for my car if the dealership closed down? ?

I bought a used car from a dealership and paid them off about 6 months ago. Well I never received the clean title without the lien on it. So anyways I went back and the place was empty. Then about a month later it reopened under a new name and the new owners said they have no records from the previous owners and I would have to go to the Department of Transportation or something. Can someone help me? Is this right? I live in Minnesota. I just bought a new car and want to give this hunk of junk to my brother so I need a title asap.

  1. Contact the DMV and explain the situation to them.

  2. The people that carried your loan on the car will be the one you get your title thru. Contact them.

  3. get the vin number take it to the local dmv do a title search might try for a lost title that might work they may charge for this also

  4. Look for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Deputy registrar, or car title company in your area in your phone book or on the web.  Usually where you obtained your driver's license from and car tags. ( Although some separate their services.)

  5. Go to your local tag agency they can tell you what to do.  The problem you are going to have though is if the dealer you bought it from did not file a lien release it could be a problem.
