How do I get a water hydrant to stop leaking when I raise the handle?

This is a farm water hydrant. It leaks around the part that goes up and down through the middle when you lift the handle

You can try to tighten the nut around the shaft to stop the leak.  If that doesn't work you'll have to replace the packing or other seal under the nut.
