How do I get an alert sound when somebody instant messages me when I am web surfing?

In windows live messenger, yahoo messenger or one of the dozens of others, they all are a little different you need to be more specific.

on top of your messenger, click on messenger, g odown click on preferences. on the left, click on alerts and sounds. on the right click on the one that says i recieve an instant message. click on browse. choose the sound you want. click on open ,then apply then ok. hope this helps
