Question:

How do I get an internship with the State Department?

I'm considering a Political Science degree. If I do, an internship at an Embassy/Consulate in London or Toronto sounds good. Maybe something with the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS).

An another idea might be an internship with a foreign country's embassy/consulate in the US. How would I go about looking into that?

  1. u hv to write in to state dept and see if they hv such a program.  with political sci - maybe slim.  with IR - maybe.  to be attached to overseas is not possible as security clearance is required from  DC.

attachment to foreign embassies is near impossible - as embassies have strict security clearance.  u can try some small non-threatening countries

  2. You will have to apply for an internship (but they are extremely competitive!!!) and I don't think they are available until you are already studying in University or have finished your degree. I think you need to have a security clearance to work with DSS, but I could be wrong. A degree in anything doesn't guarantee a job, so I strongly suggest getting involved in organisations and volunteering outside your courses. This will make you more attractive to prospective employers. Also, learn some useful computer skills (become an expert at Microsoft Excel, Word and powerpoint).

I studied a political science focused undergrad and really enjoyed the course and insight it gave me. Interns never get the nice jobs, and have to start at the bottom with all the new employees.....

Don't limit yourself to just working for the government. There are lots of think tanks offering more opportunities than the government.

    Good luck!
