How do I get back into shape for cross country?

My season starts next week and I haven't ran all summer! No one could drive me to the optional practices so all summer I've just been a couch potato. I'm so out of shape that running up my stairs causes me to have to slow down. How do I get back into shape by next week? I have a treadmill at home but running a mile on a treadmill isn't equivalent to running a real mile. I've been doing lunges and sit ups. What else can I do? Please help! Thanks in advance.

  1. It takes about 4 weeks to get into the "ideal" shape so dont expect to be in true form in only a week. You should start by running/jogging short distances outside and gradually increase the distance you are running. Hope that helps

  2. simply getting outside to run is helpful. it doesn't have to be during a practice. every little bit helps. you should probably just continue to do stretches and work your muscles. get yourself into a position and hold it. this will open your lungs and flex your muscles. try laying down on your back and lifting you legs in the air. hold that up to 30 seconds at a time. this will help in the same ways i've just descibed. there are a lot of things you can do. it's rougher if you only have a week but perseverance is key. just remember, every step you run gets you closer to your goal.

hope i helped and best of luck!
