Do I just reverse the directions from the answer about Gare du Nord to Gare Montparnassee? There are 3 of us with luggage to carry. We are arriving at Gare Montparnasse from Chartres around 17:00 or 18:00

  1. If your party can each carry their own luggage the Metro would be your best bet.  However as you may know the metro requires a lot of stair climbing and some direction changes that may require more stairs and walking.  This may be difficult with luggage.  If you decide to go that way the metro map is very easy to figure out.  If your party is not up to this I can see no alternative other than a taxi.  It would be more expensive and they always are a wild ride if you've taken one.  You'd at least see some sites along the way.  Paris is bare none THE most beautiful city in the world.

Beware of buying a first class rail pass in France.  Some buy them to be sure that their luggage gets handled for you in first class.  A first class pass does not insure that you will be able to get into first class as it sometimes is full.  Your rail pass then becomes a regular ticket which means you'll have to take car of your own bags.  Some times a problem especially for the elderly.

  2. A taxi is the safest way to travel. If not take the Metro to Pasteur and take line 12 to Montparnasse Bienvenue on line 4. THis should take you to Gare de Nord. If you can walk to Montparnasse Bienvenue it will be easier!!!

  3. Montparnasse to Gare du Nord is a direct route on the Metro line 4. No changes involved, although the corridors at Montparnasse station are a bit long. It's faster than taking a taxi.

Depends how much luggage you have.

The actual metro ride is about 20 minutes. add 5 minute waiting time (it's actually more like 2 minutes, but play safe), five minutes to get to the platform, five minutes to get off at the other end and find your train.

Assume a total of 45 minutes and you'll be OK. Give it an hour  to play really safe and you can buy a coffee at the Gare du Nord wth the spare time.

  4. Take Metro line 4 marked "Direction : Porte de Clignancourt" from the Montparnasse-Bienvenue station. Its a 16 minute ride to Gare du Nord.
