I'm thinking of taking a bus from Sao Paulo to Rio, which are the best bus companies? how far are the bus terminals from the GRU airport? how much would it cost a taxi to the terminal? how much is it the bus ticket from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro?

A travel company suggested that I take a plane from Sao Paulo to Rio, since the cost of the plane ticket (round trip) is pretty much the same as the bus fare...is it true?

Sorry, I know there are too many questions....I just know nothing about this country I'm so excited to visit.

  1. It's simple, take a plane. All other means of transportation will take too much time. The distance is great and assaults on buses are on the rise.

Also you have no idea where you're going in Brazil, how are you going to take a taxi? You would never know if he's taking you to your destination or your death. Besides it's going to cost too much, especially because you're a tourist.

P.S. the dude who told you to take the subway probably never been to Brazil in his life.

  2. There is no subway service to the Guarulhos airport. You can take a shuttle bus to the subway and then the subway to the Tietê bus station. That's probably what the other contributor meant.

You may want to check into airfares from Guarulhos to Rio. You may be able to get a deal and save yourself some hassle.

  3. You are best off taking a plane to RJ. Its about a forty minute trip one way. I am not sure of the exact fare compared to the bus ride but I would think its about 30 percent more by air. I wouldnt advise going by bus. Though comfortable, the bus takes about seven hours or so. Then from GRU airport you have to get to the bus terminal. That is another hour by cab or by airport bus. The whole doesnt seem worth it. The bus terminal has its share of pickpockets etc. Its sensible to fly. Gol airways have fares that are very low budget and almost the same as the bus. You could check their website. I think its voegol.com

  4. I have done it a few times. I would take train (subway) from the airport to the bus station. Then, take a bus from there for RJ. Subway is cheap and so is the bus. This costs about 25% of the airfare. However, you end up spending over half a day in extra travel. Good luck!
