The easiest way to do this without a car is by train. Take the train from Naples to Potenza and change there to a train for Melfi. The total cost will be 10.50 euro in the regional trains and the travel time is approximately 4 hours. The exact time depends on which train you take.

There are other options with two train changes, but the easiest is going to Potenza first.
