How do I get grass to die or go away?

I want to plant new flowers in the bed, it has mulch on it and I'm tearing all of it out. I need the grass to die/go away because there is so much of it. How can i do this?

yes round up works great, we live on a farm and mix our own in a large industrial sprayer, however department stores sell round up in spray bottles all over.  

Do note that round up kills EVERYTHING... if you get a little close to things you dont want to die, they will too!!

Within days you will see it turn brown, you will have to keep doing it every few weeks depending on your plan, dont do it if you are expecting rain.

Your best bet would just be to remove the grass with about 1/2 an inch or so of soil then work up your bed... i dont usually use round up in my gardens...

there's four things you can do

1) apply a herbicide that contains glyphosate

the advantages of this is it kills fast, but the chemicals don't last long enough to kill new sprouting grass or weeds

2) is you can rototille the lawn and then water it wait about a week and rototill the new sprout grass or weeds it you will have to do this for about a week

advantages are you just rototill and water

disadvantages is it take about 4 weeks

3)In the spring get a clear plastic cover big enough to cover your intier lawn, on the edges if the plastic make sure there no spaces that air or water that can get in. what will happen is the grass wont belive ther luck the will start to grow vigorously because they are protect by the elements, but in a month or so it will become a jungle under the plastic this why you need to make sure there's no open spaces be the gress will push the plastic up. after a month the grass will be burned alive.

advantages all you do is apply cover and clean up also weeds will not grow for about 3 years, but the whole process take about 2 months

4) wet some newspaper lightly and place it over the lawn then put manure over it, the news paper will decompose in a short time.

smother it would be the best idea.

llay down a couple of layers of cardboard or 12+ layers of newspaper over it then add about 6" of mulch over that

If you want immediate results, use a spade to dig it up.  You can use weed and grass killers from the store, but, it will take a long time.
