Question:

How do I get him to back off???

I started working for a new company about 5 weeks ago. One of the managers found out I was raised LDS but am no longer practising. He's been coming up to me and nagging me that I should start again, etc. I'm HAPPY with my decisions and happy with my life as it is--I have no inkling to return to the LDS faith. How can I get him (kindly) to back up? He's a nice guy but the whole religion thing is not appreciated. I am the assistant to his boss, he is a manager.

  1. tell him to stop.  if he doesn't, that is harrassment and go to HR.

  2. Well, you are going to have to come clean to him and be firm. Also be polite with him, and tell him that you have no interest in discussing religion with him or anyone else at work and that his conversation topic makes you uncomfortable. Tell him you really don't want to report his harassing but if it continues, you will have no choice.

  3. Sometimes women have to say no and mean it. Politely tell this man that you feel his interest in your private life is inappropriate and that he must no longer bring up this topic. Don't apologize or hedge. I work with a lot of men who try to undermine my position and I take each of them aside and tell them to stop it. I always end by asking them how they would feel if I deemed them in front of their co-workers. They usually stop. The idiots who don't just fade away.

If this man continues to harass you then speak to your boss. There is no place in business for that man's actions.

    Be strong!

  4. He is taking advantage of his position.  If you have told him you are not interested, your next move is the human relations department.  Get your concerns documented; don't threaten anything, just ask what they would suggest you do.  Make sure the conversation with HR is documented.
