If I bought a new laptop is there some type of router I have to get for a internet connection? Is there a certain one for a wireless internet connection? Or is there a cord that i can just plug in somewhere? How much is a router? to be honest I don't have much of an idea --- so any information would be GREAT!!

Thanks.

  1. Well first, if your computer has a wireless adapter installed into it, just connect to your wireless network.

Control panel - network settings - and turn on the wireless adapter if it is off.

  2. First you have to sign up with an Internet Service Provider.

If it is for DSL which is the quickest They will send you a DSL modem with instructions on how to connect and set it up

Once you have this equipment if you have trouble contact me for further help

  3. Most laptops there days come with a wireless card built in. This allows you to access Wi-Fi hotspots.

You can choose to purchase a wireless plan, which allows you to access your wireless internet anywhere.

If you have a high speed connection in the house, you can use an Ethernet cord to hook up to the wall and laptop.

A router isn't neccessary, but is quite useful if you want to walk around the house without using an Ethernet cord.

  4. 1st you need an ISP (internet Service provider: Road runner, prodigy, the cable tv, etc)

These companies usually provide customers with a little box (the router = which is a modem and a router in one box) many of these routers are able to broadcast a wireless signal and since all new laptops come with a wireless adaptor (receiver) that allows them to catch the router wireless signal.

You will be able to roam around your house and maybe in the garden  connected to the internet with your notebook with no cables attached; but if you want something that allows you to go beyond your garden like on a busm on a taxi or  from 100 miles from your house you need an air card (a very little little adaptor that you plug into the notebook) this adaptor is like a cell phone (but no you can't make calls) because Cell phone companies are the ones that provide this kind of internet connection: T-mobile, AT&T, Verizon

  5. Well, if you want to sit anywhere in your house and have wireless internet then yes, you need to buy a wireless router.  However, most DSL/Cable companies give you the router when you order their service.  So decided which service you are going to choose to be your internet service provider and ask them about a wireless router.  Oh and, your laptop has to have WIFI NIC... (Wireless network interface card)

If you dont mind being connected through wires, then you can just plug either the phone line in for dialup connections, or an ethernet cable in for dsl or cable connection.  Again, you have to have an ISP to do this.
