Question:

How do I get into homeschooling in New Jersey?

I'm seriously considering homeschooling. I live in northern New Jersey and I'm kinda confused on where to start looking for homeschooling businesses.

I heard of places that you can go to, I suppose they're similar to Sylvan Learning centre, just not only for tutoring, where you can hire a teacher to meet with every week or so. I have a very vague idea of how I can begin, though.

I don't know anything about the money, or who I could ask to get me started. Do you think a library would be of any help?

I guess I'm just asking for any help and information you can provide about homeschooling.

Thanks :)

Oh, and I'm a sophomore in high school if that's any help...

  1. Homeschooling is conducted in your home under your parents guidance and supervision.  The first thing you need to do is find out your state’s laws.

In New Jersey you are not required to have a certified teacher, undergo testing or report to the state.  It is not necessary to hire a teacher or in home tutor.  At your age, much of the work can be completed independently.

Online homeschooling is a great option if you are able to learn independently and self motivated to complete assignments.  Here are some online homeschooling options:

You may also want to consider a textbook program that you can complete on your own.  Here are some popular providers:

    Good luck!

  2. look on the web. im home school it can good and bad

    some time

  3. True homeschooling is not at all like going to Sylvan learning center.  True homeschooling is where you and your parents determine your educational plan, set goals and come up with the means (both money and books) to achieve them.  It is very much a do-it-yourself undertaking.  I would highly recommend starting at the library, in the 370's and check out books on homeschooling. I particularly recommend those by John Holt, Jessie Wise and the Colfaxes.

Money is up to you and your parents. No state or federal money is available to homeschoolers in NJ.  You do however, have complete freedom, which no amount of tax money could buy!

Good luck and have fun on this adventure!
