  1. This is not a profession that you start out near the top. A few years working in the derrick or on the floor. The driller is the one that runs the rig, boss over derrick and floor hands. The salary is the best point, pays more than unskilled labor. You are out in the elements 8 hours, dirty job, hard work and hazardous job. Most just work there because it pays more than most 8 hr jobs. Probably considered a step down from most professions.

  2. Go to a bar where the roughnecks hang out.  They will tell you if you have what it takes.

Oil derricks have a lot of heavy parts and is dangerous work even if you are careful.  So they don't take just anyone.

Say you are a team player and played football somewhere.

  3. Well, write to one of the big oil companies. They're about to move into Basra so there should be plenty of work for you.

  4. First, you sell your soul to the devil.

Then, you draw a pentagram on the floor.....

    Kidding, I have no idea.

  5. Just start interviewing - it would help to be somewhere where companies are based, or where a lot of work is going on.  It's a really specific profession that takes a lot of work - so a lot of the time all it takes is someone with interest and drive.

You'll probably be stuck being a rig hand for a couple years until you understand the solutions to all the problems.

Education in geology or diesel mechanics helps.  Also, experience in coal drilling or geotechnical drilling will help.
