Question:

How do I get into time trialing?

I ride road bike and tried racing a criterium a while back. It was my very first one and I sucked bad. I have not done one since and want to stop being a wimp about it. I have read that time trialing is a great way to prepare myself for another crit. I really want to try this but have no clue how to register for one. I am not involved with any clubs at this time. I hope I do not have to be in order to time trial. Can anyone please help to get me headed in the right direction?

  1. You don't have to be a part of a club to time-trial, but it would help. The issue is handling skills and you don't get that in absentia you got to be out there doing it. Doing it with a club allows you to get faster because clubs welcome all levels.

But, I don't know what you read, I can't see how time trialing is going to help you in a crit. A crit is all about jockeying for position in the peloton and a time trial is all about technology and getting you to the end either alone or with a group as fast as possible.

Most race series have a crit as well as time-trials in conjunction with it. Some series have a tour ride also. To sign up you can get a one day event license from USA Cycling and sign-up as an independent or if you plan to do it a lot then buy the year license.

The better direction to head into is clubs and teams. If you get fast enough in a club and get noticed by someone on a team or club that has a team then you will be gaining necessary handling skils while working to become a racer.
