Question:

How do I get ivy going on a wooden fence and trellis?

I'm a complete gardening novice but I've got a wooden fence about 7 feet high and I want to get some ivy growing on it. What do I do, just take some clippings from other ivy and plant them at the base of the fence? Do I need to put good soil at the base of the fence? I really have no clue. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Also if there are any vines other than ivy that work well on wooden fences, I'd like to hear your suggestions. I'm open to a variety as it is a very long fence, about 50 feet. The fence gets a pretty good amount of sun from dawn to mid-afternoon.

  1. I've had Morning Glory growing like weeds at my house along the fence. I put up some nails and wire to make a kind of makeshift trellis and it did just great. it really depends on what climate you are in to see what would work best for you.
