How do I get model #&serial# of a johnson outboard motor?

70hp 3cyle johnson outboard motor need year&model&serial# so I can get it regis. I bought it in a nother state.On top of the motor a small round plate about the size of a quarter has the number 043178 would this be the model number.Thank Rob.

  1. There might be a small plate riveted to the left side of the motor just under the cowling. It should give you year and model number. If it is there just take the numbers to any dealer and he can give you the year and model. On my small outboard that is where it is but on a 70 HP you may just need to call a Johnson dealer with that. They will know where the tag is at. Or go to groups at Yahoo and join ( its free ) the " antique outboard " group and post your question. I have had help there from old to fairly new motors.Hope this helps you.


  2. the 043 # you give is a part number, the number should be on the port side of the bracket on  metal  riveted plate
