Question:

How do I get moldy/musty smell out of tupperware plastic scoops?

Recently I purchased vintage tupperware plastic scoops on eBay. There is no visible mold but they have a very distinct moldy/musty odor to them. I tried soaking them in water with baking soda added; didn't work. Then I washed them in the dishwasher after soaking them in hot water and regular dish detergent; also, didn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Deebee

  1. I would try a weak (4:1, 1 pt Bleach, to 4 parts water) solution and soak them over night.

  2. Believe it or not, but we used the same stuff

that cleans out baby's feeding bottles, left in it overnight.

  3. Try a mix of 1 part vinegar to 1/4 part baking soda-it works on laundry, shower curtains and every other item I have needed to get mildew smells out of.

  4. Forget the bleach, it stinks and leaves another smell to contend with.

This is an old remedy and works a treat, try it and see.

Put your tupperware in the freezer (hope you have one) and leave it there for a few days at least, dont seal it or anything like that, just put them in and leave for awhile.  give it a wash in good hot soapy water and dry in the sun - I have also found putting things in a sunny spot in the open air to be good for removing many smells from other things

Hope that you find this useful

  5. laundry detergent and bleach will work! soak them in a tub overnight and when they are dry keep them open do not close them unless you are storing things in them . They were closed for a long time this is what caused the smell .
