I only have like 3% free space on my hard drive, and I have a portable hard drive,I keep clicking on the disc cleaner but nothing seems to work. I tried to defrag the disc but it says I don't have enough free space to even do that.Any suggestions?

  1. If you got a lot of stuff on your hard drive that you don't need, delete it. If it's all stuff you want to keep, get a flash drive and dump some of it on there.

The best way to clear up your hard drive is to use an external storage device. I use my iPod as a storage device to save video, pictures, other files, to keep my hard drive open.

You can go to Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, and buy a flash drive for 20-30 bucks.

  2. take off all the items never used but kept in case you need them.also put some rarly used files on cd's/dvd's as data.

check the library on "media " players you may have items stored there .which are duplicated in other media library's and also in your "my documents/music /picture files"

install and run "ccleaner" free.it will remove all the temp files and cookies you have collected while browsing the web.it will gain you some memory.

    now defrag your hard drive.

    hope this helps

  3. If you have XP you can RIGHT CLICK on the RECYCLE BIN Icon, Click on PROPERTIES and reduce the default to 1% INSTEASD instead of the 10%.

You'll have to Restart your computer for the change to take effect though.

  4. Burn stuff you want to keep but don't use a lot (like photos) onto CD/ DVD

Open Add or remove Programs in the control panel.

You can view them in an approximate order of how recently they've been used.

Remove programs that you don't use anymore.

(before you do this, it might be a good idea to make a backup of your current system settings using Windows Restore)

  5. Delete things you don't need or buy and install a larger hard disk

  6. Remove not only unnecessary files but useless programs as well. Some games also eats up large space so u might wanna remove it too.

You must go to Control Panel to remove such programs (Add/Remove programs)

After that, try using Disk Cleanup (or manually clear up recycle bin, clear history from internet explorer and delete cookies) You may also try transferring huge files s.a. movies or photos on a cd. Hopefully Disc Defrag will work by now too.

Good luck and hope everything will be fine soon.

  7. Save to disk any needed stuff and re-install windows(or Ubuntu available free online)

  8. erase stuff you no longer need or buy a bigger hard drive with more space
