Question:

How do I get more listeners to my radio show?

I present a soul/funk/disco show on Subcity Radio in Glasgow (www.subcity.org), on Monday nights called "The Shiny Disco Ball."

I post download links to my show each week on the Subcity forum, my Bebo blog (bebo.com/discocampbell), Facebook and Myspace, on a Yahoo! disco group and some disco forums though my listenership is low.

Could anyone please give me some advice as to get word out better? I put flyers around Glasgow University awhile back though didn't make too much of a difference.

  1. Posting it on Yahoo! Answers

  2. Word of mouth is the best advertising for what you're trying to do. WoM builds over time among people who really like what you're doing.

But, Oh my, I must be in a mood tonight, "The Shiny Disco Ball?" Others may disagree, but that is (I feel like Simon Crowell) the lamest name for a show I've heard since my first morning show in college.

I'm not trying to ruin your day, you're probably a nice chap, but hip-up, dude. The internet is international. A few flyers around a local U isnt going to do it. Yeah you've got a blog and the usual MSpace and Facebook pages, but what are you DOING to make people listen?

I think it was Louis Armstrong who said, "It's in the grooves, baby." Meaning if the music's right people will hear it, gravitate to it and tell others. If the music is wrong, you're screwed. So examine what you're playing, what you call it and how you are promoting it. And good luck. Anyone who can make Disco a success again will have my unrelenting admiration. I won't listen, but I'll admire you as a promoter - 'cause that's a tough format to push.

  3. what i do is make a myspace, add tons of people and promote yourself that way

  4. Get word out there, post links everywhere that you can. Flyers won't do you any good because you need to attract people when they are on the Internet. Putting it on here is a nice first step.

  5. What about a youtube video of you doing the show "live"?

You may also try to make friends with the local newspapers and see if you can get some kind of cross promotion going. They do a story on you, you interview them live, etc...

If you try the flyers again, get them into the hands of people with your demographic. University students probably don't listen to a *ton* of soul/funkdisco (then again, I may be wrong). You might want to try to figure out who exactly would be a good fit for your listenership, and then post flyers in areas they frequent. For example, you mentioned disco - are there any record shops in town that sell that style of music? How about dance halls? Concert halls with soul bands playing? - Those are the kinds of places you might want to try placing flyers or posters.

Good luck and keep in touch (e-mail in profile)

  6. How about doing something that doesn't suck!  You have to imagine the market for "Soul/funk/disco" isn't very big...

Give the people what they want...Take a walk around town for a couple hours, ask everyone who walks by, "What radio station do you listen to...?"  Take the results and work off that.

Otherwise, you're playing to a very small crowd.
