Question:

How do I get my 3 year old to stop pooping in his underwear?

My 3 year old was pooping on the potty but for the last 2 months he has been pooping in his underware. He knows when he has to go (he even "hides" right next to the toilet) but just doesn't. We tried just cleaning it up, we tried reintroducing the potty chart with rewards, we tried taking away privelages, we even tried spanking (something we said we'd never do). Finally we decided to make him clean up himself and any mess he made in the process (wiping up floor and tub, rinsing out his clothes etc). The first few times he hated it and I thought for sure it would resolve the problem. But now he has just gotten better at cleaning up the mess. Any ideas

  1. ask him every once and awhile if he has to go and check where he hides often and if he has to go help him sit on the topilet and make it fun and give him something cool afterwards.

if he goes in his pants the next time take that cool thing plus 2 other things away.

  2. This is very normal.  For my sons I took the approach that I wanted to make them comfortable and to remove as many fears as possible.  I put toilet paper over the water to stop splashes in the toilet and I found a very sturdy stool with sides for the toilet so they could hold on the whole time.  http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Child-Corpor...

This stool allowed them to completely relax and made all the difference for them.  Well worth it.  Hope this helps.

  3. I like the idea of making him clean up - sounds like something I would do!  :)

But with my son - he was doing the same thing. They say it has something to do with having an object fall from his body (unlike girls who sit on the potty to relieve themselves - boys stand).  So that is why it is hard for boys to p**p train vs. girls.

So I took my sons undies off and let him run around bare butt.  He never once pooped on the floor - he actually had to p**p so bad once that he kept saying "mommy I want my undies back!".  I told him no and if he had to p**p to go on the potty.  Then when he went on the potty - we obviously made a big "stink" lol... about it.....

    Try the no undies....

  4. Dont get angry, try a reward chart.

  5. give him some diapers
