I want him to start standing since he's going to pre-school. Is having him watch me a few times the best way? Advice from other dads please

  1. I'm not a dad but i did potty train my brothers. Try putting fruit loops in the toilet and have each color be a different praise like different Candy's or something.

  2. Make sure that he can easily reach over the edge of the toilet bowl to pee comfortably by placing a small box in front for him to stand on.  Many children's shops sell properly shaped plastic boxes for this purpose.

Let him see you and other adults/older boys doing it standing up so he gets the idea that this is the way to do it.  You may also want to take up the idea of making a game out of hitting bits of paper in the toilet bowl with his stream.

  3. I'm not sure why you care -- it will not harm him unless YOU make a big deal of it to urinate however he wants to.  I would suggest getting over your own issues and letting your son urinate however he wants to.  It has worked for everyone I know.  My sons were old enough when I got them so that it wasn't an issue (adopted) and our daughter is obviously not equivalent on this issue -- but I certainly would not interfere, or attempt to get him to do anything in particular.  He will emulate his peers in school.

    Stop worrying.

  4. I would say yes, that worked for me. but, I also have 2 other boys and he watches them as well.

  5. what you sad was right and you can help him pee or just keep on showing him and help him

  6. Young guys will reach an age (some later than others) when they will urinate standing up.  You don't need to rush it.

Yes, having him watch you is probably a good idea.  When he reaches the age when he can have a bath on his own, go to the bathroom and urinate while he is having his bath so he sees how a man copes with this.  Explain to him that when he reaches the age when he is tall enough to urinate into the toilet standing up, that's what guys do.

Also, later on, when you are in public and go to the restroom together, get him to you the urinal for boys (the one built close to the ground) so it gets used to it.

Meanwhile, don't make a big deal of it.  Most young guys figure this out for themselves, since all the mens rooms have urinals.

  7. It normally happens automatically through peer pressure in the early days at school or pre school , if it hasn't already

You should take every opportunity of accompanying him , especially away from the house and seeing for himself that older boys will stand to pee , he won't want to be left out .

  8. That is a possibility, but there are others ways. Like you can make a game out of it for him. Put a piece of toilet paper in the toilet and get him to aim at that. He'll think it's a game and he'll learn to pee standing up

  9. Reminds me of a joke:  A group at a bar were talking about a woman could do anything a man could do but better.  A man said he could pee up a wall farther that a woman could..A woman took the bet and they all traipsed  outside...She dropped her pants and managed to pee up the wall about 10 inches.

The man said, I can certainly do better than that and he unzipped his pants, grabbed his p***s but before he could start, the woman said :  UH UH UHl, no hands!
