Question:

How do I get my Budgie IN his cage?

My young Budgie is hand tamed. He likes to be free. He is out of his cage 99% of the time, even when he sleeps. Since I am home with him all day, everyday, he is use to being outside his cage. He is with me all the time wherever I am in the house. However, if I need to leave the house to run an errand, I don't like leaving him uncaged, and unattended. He refuses to go in his cage now. He flies away as soon as I get him by the door. What to do?

  1. Find out his favorite food.  Only give it to him in his cage.  Make him spend half an hour in the cage every day with his special treat 'til he is used to the idea.  Make sure he has a special toy in his cage, plus make it his only reliable source of food and water.

  2. When you have him on your finger, gently put your other fingers over his feet, that way he cannot fly away. Ideally, you would want one foot on your first finger, that way you can use your thumb to hold that foot down and it gives you control. You can place the other foot on you middle or ring finger, which ever you choose, or you can also put both feet on your first finger since keets are so small. If all else fails, you can always use a bird net, but if you are like me you probably don't want to. You could also try coaxing him in there using a favorite treat, if he has one, it works on my Amazon.

  3. I leave my birds alone at the house when I need to unattended and you will find he will be a perfect gentleman once you trust him. Seriously they don't get into things any more when you are gone. I have cockatiels in their own room who never come out of the room no matter how far the door is opened. And my cockatoo is out 24/7 if she wants to be but she likes sleeping in her cage with or without the door open she doesn't care. But she does want out of it during the day. I think it would be safe enough to mind his manners when you are gone.

  4. when he is on ur finger get a light cloth and put that over it or just gently put ur hand around it while its wings are still in or keep all the food in the cage or put some broccoli in there

hope this helped and best of luck

  5. well, they don't like this, but if you have to, gently pick him up around hid tummy. he will kick hid feet but be sure not to hurt him. put him on his perch and quickly shut it.
