How do I get my HGV License?

I currently have a full driving licence with the following categories BE B1, C1, C1E, D1 D1E what do i do next? I passed my test 14-10-83

I know i can drive a 7.5 tonne lorry as have hired one recently.... Please help !

  1. Look up "LGV training" in your local Yellow Pages.  That will give you a list of training schools in your area.

    You will need to apply for a provisional LGV licence and pass a medical first.  You will then need to pass your Category C (rigids), before you can take your Category C+E (arctics).

    Budget around £1,000 - £1,500 for the whole lot.

    Your current entitlements do not qualify as a provisional for an LGV.  The LGV / HGV is and always has been separate.  In fact, when I passed my HGV test (as it was back in 1990), the HGV licence was actually a totally separate piece of paper, headed 'Vocational Licence').

    Your husband will need to apply to the DVLA to get a Category C provisional entitlement added.


  2. the only way ahead for you is to go and see BIG WHEELERS or some other driving school that does HGV training
