Question:

How do I get my LEARNER'S PERMIT in California?

Would someone please explain to me the steps to getting a permit in California? My parents & I are helpless, & calling the DMV & the DMV website has been no help.

I'm UNDER 18 (16, to be exact) & finish drivers education online about 2 months ago, but never had time to do anything more until now. So basically, I have my pink slip. Where do I go from there? Some sites say that I need to take a test & get my learner's permit before doing behind-the-wheel training, while other sites say that I need to enroll in behind-the-wheel training before I apply for my learner's permit. Please help, thanks in advance!

  1. V,

As a driving school owner here in California, I can help you.

The first thing you have to do is to call a driving school in your area and sign up for a driver training course (behind-the-wheel).  The driving school will give you a Certificate of Enrollment in Driver Training (OL-392).

Go to my web-site: http://eliteteendriver.com/ and find the Free Practice Tests in the index, print them out with the answers, and study them....it will make it much easier to pass your written test first time.  I also have all of this information printed in the web-site.

Pick up a driver's license application from the DMV (DL-44) and fill it out with signatures from both parents.

Take the OL-392 certificate, your pink certificate, social security card, birth certificate, and $29 to the DMV and take your written test.

After you take your first driver training lesson, your permit will be valid to practice with your parents.

Since driving is the #1 killer of teenagers, please pick out a very good driving school, there are a lot of schools out there that are very cheap and their quality of training reflects their prices.  View the video on the website and you'll have a good idea of what to look for.  You get what you pay for....

    I hope this helps,

    John C

  2. you have to got take the written test before you can get your permit

  3. If you already have a pink slip, you can go to the DMV and take the written test and get your permit.  You cannot enroll in behind-the-wheel until you get your permit.
