How do I get my Mother in Law's voice out of my head??!!?

ARGH!! She's so judgemental. We're trying to renovate a house and move in. She has very strong opinions about what I should be doing and how. Like, I went to help my husband work on the new house while she babysat. She said, "Shouldn't you be packing? Won't you just be in the way over there?" I guess she has gender specific ideas about what a woman should be doing. Today I mentioned that we may need to rent our current house for two more weeks because I don't think my husband has enough time to do everything. She thinks that's ridiculous, we should just move in and suffer if everything isn't done. She said, in her tone, "You can live without every little thing being done." I'm talking about having no heat in mid October with two small children home all day! No heat! I'm not talking about curtains here.

So my question is, how do I get her voice out of my head? Every single day she has some comment and I continue to run it through my head over and over. I'm here with a small child and a baby, unable to do anything on the house unless she's babysitting, so I have plenty of time to run her comments through my brain. It's making me crazy.

Mostly, it's making me really angry all day, and that's not good for my kids. And no, I can't really stay away from her. I don't know how to not talk to her about things, she's right here next to us. And she's the only babysitter I've got.

UGH!!!! Help??

  1. Easy, whenever she's around, turn on your mp3 and pump up the volume

  2. I hope you new house is farther away!!! lol

Put up with it until after the move then limit the information you give her to a "need to know" basis.

  3. It's your husband's and your job to decide what is best for your family.  It may hurt her feelings, but he needs to explain to her (politely) that you two have decided what is best.  If she continues to talk, simply cut her off by saying, Well I understand that you would do things differently but this is what we've chosen to do.

As for keeping her voice out of your head, find other things to distract you.  Take your kids to the park, play with them, etc.  This will be good for you and your kids.  Enjoy them and don't let her get to you!

  4. kill her and bury her under the floor boards. Then listen to the happy days theme song. that should do the trick!
