I am not an American Citizen and have lived in the US as a Resident on Indefinite Parole under my mother who is a Scottish-born citizen and I was born in Greenock's Hospital out of wedlock from my father whose nationality I don't know. But recently, since my graduation, I decided to move back to the UK because over there I am natural born citizen I do believe seeing as I my family all comes from there and I was born there. But I live over here in Illinois, and want a passport to go back, and I understand I need some forms of proof to show citizenship, who I am, and might have to sit an interview. But I came over here on my mom's passport because I was so young (2), and now I don't know what I need to do. My aunt is sending me my for for the application, but is there anything else I need to know? Such as how to do the interview, or if there's anything else I need besides the two pics, my birth certificate, and my mother's? Or just any productive advice you have?

  1. You probably will need your birth certificate to prove you citizenship.  Just out of curiosity, why would you not become a US citizen?. I am use you probably could have dual citizenship.

  2. You can NOT do it through the mail within the UK, the rules state as you are not within the UK you must go through the embassy. Your aunt can not send the paperwork in for you, you need to go through the UK embassy nearest to you. Your mum needs to register you as a British citizen at the UK embassy (This is assuming she was born before 1983 and was born on British soil)

Once that is done then you can apply for a British passport at the UK embassy, your mum needs her paperwork birth certificate etc. for your application. The forms can be download off the British embassy website, and all you do is mail everything to them directly, really simple!

It is a simple procedure as I have done this for my son.

EDIT ~ The process will only take a few months from start to finish, if you already have the paperwork in order (Birth certificate etc). As your mum is British born it is a simple thing it allows you to hold dual USA/UK citizienship. Which means you will not need to worry about visa etc etc for within the EU. However you will not be allowed to pass this right down to your children, as your claim is through descent.

    Good luck
