I have a volvo penta 5.0 in my 03 chapparel and I had to let it sit for a little over a month. When I got back home and tried to turn it over it would crank fine but not turn over. I have a new battery and dont think it is a battery problem. starting lanyard in connected. what happens to the carb and plugs if they have been sitting that long. also the drive goes down but not back up. Is that just because the hydro fluid has to be circulated after the engine starts after not running for awhile? someone please give a shout if they can give me some tips. I also heard about putting a shot of carb cleaner in the spark plug holes.that could help the system if it is not primed after sitting for awhile.

  1. How about first off try to clean the carborator and plugs and do just the summer/spring main sitting in the garage all winter major overhaul?//////

If that dont work, I saw my mechanic EX many a time poor shots of carbcleaner in the holes of something. dont know where though.....

  2. Gas makes the floats stick. You can tap the carb with a plastic hammer to unstick it.

    Put (Stab-eL) in the tank.

  3. Is the fuel on?  Sometimes people shut the fuel off when it sits.  I don't know if you did this.  Hit the carb with some carb cleaner. the engine should try to pop off if shot with carb cleaner right before cranking. Change the plugs.  If you bother to take them out you might as well change them.  Don't mix up the firing order of your wires,  if you do your firing order should be on the intake manifold or the valve cover.  Label the wires.  Change your fuel filter.  Water in the fuel system will cause all kinds of problems. As for the trim it could be a number of things.  The engine does not have to run for your trim to work.  It could be a stuck solenoid in the pump.  Faulty switch, stuck valve?  If the motor is working it should work.  Check your fluid level.   Check the voltage of your battery.

  4. try cleaning carb(s) they gummed up after awhile

  5. You could put the staring fluid in the top of the carb, instead of the spark plug holes.  Does the trim motor run when you put it up?you could use  a metersee if it is getting power to the motor, if it is then it is the motor, if not then it could be the trim switch, relay or wiring.  your problems are so general it could be a variety of things.

  6. maybe a little starting fluid in the air cleaner. The engine turns over but won't fire, right.
