I drive an '04 volvo S60 and the brakes squeal. Is there anything to help that (the dealership said volvos and jaguars tend to do this but I am curious of any possible ideas)?

  1. The biggest cause of brake squeal is aftermarket pads or the channels where the pads slide on the mount was not cleaned and lubricated.  I always recommend Volvo pads because they don't squeak or click like cheap aftermarket pads.  Also Volvo's official stance is you are not supposed to machine rotors since the heat from cutting will make them warp again very soon.  I do recommend a dealership for all work other than the easy stuff you can do like bulbs, wiper blades, etc.  As a tech at the volvo dealership i get to fix all mistakes that the aftermarket shops make or the owner.  hope this helped .

  2. Depends how recently you had the brakes overhauled. Discs generally have a thin steel insert behind the pads to stop squealing, if they are there and it still happens you can get some specialized stuff called (I think) "Stop Squeal" or possibly "Squeal Stop"  that you apply to the back of the pads.

If it persists try a brake specialist shop.

  3. Ceramic pads are less prone to noise than semi metallic. Also make sure the slides pins have plenty of lube. I also put noise reduction coating on the back of the pads. Thats about all you can really do.

  4. brake squeal for a few reasons first one is they are almost bad... or rust a round the rotors.... or the type of pad that it is... or the backs of the pads  wasnt greased .... and then theres the bad word you said dealership which is really the last place to be having work done at....you know a set of front brake pads cost like 25 bucks for most every type of car made... takes 30 minutes to replace... take only a minute to check and see if they are bad or close to it... my wife does her own brake at home as do i rotor i have turn at a shop cost like 30 bucks so my brake job cost like 50 bucks and its done in a couple hours what they charge you at dealership.... most brake shops cost starts about 98.00 for front and just a bit more for back so 200 bucks or about.. at most shops that really work on cars.. dealership is not a place to have any work done

  5. I am assuming that the brakes have been recently done or at least have been checked and not in need of replacing or service.  That being said, chances are it is just brake noise.  There is a substance that can be put on the back of the brake pads that can reduce the noise.  Check with your dealer or mechanic.
