Do I place them in a small cage together? My female has just come in to heat and my male is excited but she is so excited and hyper she won't hold still. How do I know if she is old enough to breed. Any suggestions or advice would be great.

  1. As a breeder myself, i must say I agree with the consensus...DO NOT breed your dogs. It is a very expensive venture and best left to experts. It sounds so simple...put two dogs of different sexes together and viola..puppies. It's not like that. You need to research genetics, age requirements, housing, nutrition...etc. The list really goes on and on. If you are dead set on breeding dogs i say you should study up on it. Dont start breeding with the pair you have now because the learning should be done before you even purchase the prospective breeding dogs. You can end up losing your female or an entire litter of puppies if your dog and ***** are not properly matched.

  2. I now have a blog on that whole subject

    http://golden-joy.blogspot.com

I dont' have great advice on just this but you may want to check with a yahoo group for breeding.  just use search tool.

  3. Your female shouldn't be mated until at least her second heat.  She should be 18 months old at that time and will not accept the male until after the 10th day and not after the 14th day.

  4. You don't, cant you find something else to do. Put a puzzle together.  The shelters are overwhelmed with stray dogs from people intentionally or unintentionally letting their dogs breed.  Please get them fixed..

  5. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I beg you, listen to the people answering your question. Do not mate them. The mortality rate of mother Chihuahuas is huge, they die basically! and without a mother, many if not all of the puppies will die and you will feel terrible, if she doesn't die and the puppies don't die, they could end up in shelters or in good homes that if they hadn't gotten your puppy would have adopted a puppy in the pound that is now dead. Either way a puppy dies! Please, take our advice, we are not trying to bash you or insult you1 at least I'm not, I'm just worried about your dogs and the puppies of the shelters. Please reconsider.

  6. ~ After looking at your other questions I would say you are over sexed.  You want your dogs to breed yet you can't figure out your own sexual problems.  I would have your dog spayed and just enjoy them as pets, someone so naive should not be breeding dogs.  This is not something you do when you are bored and need extra cash, breeding should be taken very seriously and should be left to the experts to produce quality dogs.

  7. I have one piece of advice; don't breed her with a great dane. It is just wrong and cruel.

Sorry all joking aside.  Before you breed, get educated.  Not through Yahoo answers, but through your vet.  First find out if there is a need in your area.  Let him work with you on timing, and how to do it.  Let him know that it your intention so that not only you are ready but your vet is too.

  8. Wrong question. If you don't even know how to start the breeding process, what are you doing trying to breed the dogs in the first place? Evidently this the first time she's been in heat. Any half-wit breeder knows NOT to breed a puppy on it's first, or even second heat cycle. She's not even grown, for goodness sake! Chihuahuas, especially are one of the most fragile types of dog there is to breed. Of course you know this, Right? You've read up and educated yourself about the pros and cons of breeding Chihuahuas, right?  WRONG! Are you a professional Breeder? NO! Have you had any experience breeding? NO!  Are you aware of the complications of breeding Chuhuahuas? NO! Do you have a breeding mentor? NO!

Are you aware of what to do in case one or more of many possibile complications happen? NO Are you even aware of what complications CAN happen? NO! And you're still wanting to breed your dogs when there are so many unknowns involved? WHY? Because you think it would be "cute" to have puppies off your 2 Chihuahuas. DUMB! I've owned dogs and dealt with them for over 45 years, and I have NEVER  once thought it wise for me to try to breed dogs! I don't have the skills or expertise. Nor have I used mine for stud, nor have I taken them to a stud for breeding. We have entirely too much of this kind of careless, thoughtless, inexperienced backyard breeding going on now. That's why there is such an overpopulation of dogs. Thats why thousands of dogs are put to sleep daily IN THIS COUNTRY. You can't be a dog lover! If you were, you would have already had your female spayed, and your male neutered. Especially considering the fact that they are Chuhuahuas and have great difficulty with pregnancies and deliveries. I own a Chihuahua. The first thing I did, when he was 6 months old was have him neutered. I own 2 female Boxers. I had both of them spayed as puppies, as well. Of course, being the dog expert you are, you know that spay/neutering not only prevents unwanted and dangerous pregnancies, but also has many benefits to training, controlling, and giving your dog a healthier body & lifestyle? NO? I didn't think so.

I have two directions of advice for you:

    1) get the notion of breeding out of your head and have both dogs fixed....or

    2) Give the dogs to a rescue shelter where the dogs can be placed in a responsible, loving home.

"mutter" "mutter"..."curse"..."mutter" irresponsible pet owners tick me off

  9. Sheri, before you breed anything you should be knowledgable about the breed and breeding practices, it's not as simple as putting two dogs together and hoping for the best.  There are only certain times the female is even ready to receive the male, otherwise she'll tear him to pieces, also if she's under 2 years old she's too young to breed and so is he.

Do you have a lot of money for the vet bills?  chihuahua's always need C-Sections when they give birth, the cost for that is in the high Thousands, what happens when the surgery costs you $5000?  What if you don't sell the puppies and you're stuck with them?

This is an article you should read and carefully consider what you're doing BEFORE it's too late.

Please if you don't know what you're doing, spay and neuter your dogs.

  10. -sigh- people like you are the reason so many innocent, healthy, lovable, pets are killed EVERY DAY! I used to work at an animal shelter. I tell you what....go work at your local shelter for a month...then tell me if you want to contribute to the over population problem by breeded another litter. You have no idea how to breed dogs...i doubt any medical testing has been done to either of your dogs either. Spay her, neuter him, love them forever. Simple

  11. Dont. There are too many homeless dogs already

  12. You don't...If you don't even know the basics of getting the dogs to mate then you don't have near enough knowledge about breeding to even consider breeding your dogs.

You female will be old enough to breed when she is 2yrs old, has an AKC (assuming you are in the US) confirmation championship, has had all breed relevant health testing, you have researched her pedigree for any problem in the lines there is not genetic test for (ie a history of cancer in the lines)   you have learned the breed standard backwards and forwards until you can recite it in your sleep.  You know everything you possible can about Chihuahuas, you have gotten a breed mentor who is an experience responsible breeder and they decided you a ready to breed and you have the money for pre and post natal care for the b*tch and her puppies as well as for any emergencies such as a c-section.

Also know that your male in all likelihood is not the best choice of mate for her, responsible breeders go far and wide to find the best match for their b*tch the don't use the male they own for the dog down the street because it is convenient.     Also know that will small breeds the male absolutely must be smaller than the female and that small breed dogs are at a much higher risk for complications.  There is a risk when breeding any dog but it more so with very small breeds.  Are you really willing to risk your pets life simply because you think she is cute and want puppies from her or because you want to make a few dollars.

  13. First take a look at petfinder.com and tell me if we need any more Chihuahua's in this world who don't have forever homes.

If you want more dogs go adopt ones that need homes....don't create more.

  14. Before you even attempt to breed your pups, please do as much research as you can on the matter. There are alot of things that can go wrong that in the end could cost you the life of your female, the puppies or both. Talk to your vet as well and get as much information from them as you can. I do not recommend breeding unless your dogs are the epitome of the breed, have both been checked for any type of genetic diseases that can be passed onto the puppies, have excellent bloodlines, have been showed and are in excellent health. Breeding should really be left up to those that know exactly what they are doing and are breeding to better the breed. I have an Akita that someone bred because they thought that their male and female were great dogs. However, they did not bother to test both parents to ensure that they were in great health and would not pass anything on to the puppies. Needless to say, my akita is 2 years old now and I have spent well over 4,000.00 in vet bills due to him having a genetic malformation of his back legs and knees that required him to have corrective surgery.

  15. If you have to ask this question, then you need to stop trying to breed them!

You havent done nearly enough research yet to breed your dogs.  Getting them to mate is the easy part.. its alot more complicated, costly and risky from there.

You need to find yourself a mentor first.  You can find one in the show ring while you are earning CH titles on your dogs.

Your dogs are not ready to breed until they are CH. titled, and have passed all health tests at 2 years of age.. (OFA CERF BAER and Optigen)

You will also need to study, research.. get a mentor, and also save some money, as prenatal care is NOT cheap!

  16. DONT. i dont want to see anymore ugly chihuahas hanging around

  17. Dogs should only be bred at or after 2 years of age AFTER they have received genetic health testing (OFA, BAER, etc...NOT just a regular veterinary exam, although that will need to be done too) and have gotten a score of "normal" or better on the health test, and prefferably after they have earned a title or have been proven as a reliable working dog. You can't force dogs to breed either, if she doesn't want to breed, she's not going to.

  18. The simple answer:  If you don't know, you shouldn't breed.  End of story.  Get your dogs fixed and enjoy them for the rest of their lives.

  19. Um... no.

    Simply put... no.

Edit:  This poor chihuahua is only 9 months old... her first heat cycle!

    NO.
