  6. to disable startup programs, go to start → run → type "msconfig" →OK

    In the window that appears, go to the tab on the right, labeled "startup".

    uncheck everything that is not absolutely necessary. I disable everything but antivirus. These programs will still start if you need them. They just won't automatically start at boot anymore.

    Each time you do this, at the next boot a message will appear that says "you have used the configuration utility". I just check the little box that says "don't show this message again and close it. You might want to make sure there are no problems(there shouldn't be) the first time before you check that box on the second boot.
