I have the crank tool but I can't get the bolt to give. I'm turning it counter clockwise, but it's starting to strip. Any ideas? I'm getting frustrated...

  1. there is a special key used to open the crank. it is round and really thick

  2. Man.....bummer.

Worst case scenario is that you have to tear up the crank arm and replace it, but hopefully you can get if off and just replace the crank bolt without going through that trouble.

First, try to use an air impact wrench to remove the bolt using the proper socket (probably a 15mm).   Put some *good* quality penetrant in there before you try, since your bolt is already close to failing.   It might be a good idea to remove the opposite crankarm and dribble some penetrant into the spindle from the opposite side before you try again.

Sometimes heating up the bolt will help, but you have to be careful doing that so that you don't remove the temper from the crankarm or the bb spindle.   A small torch flame will do it.  Wave it around gently on the bolt for short periods until it gets warm, then try to remove it.

If that doesn't do it, then your next unfortunate step is to drill the crankbolt and try to use a s***w extractor to remove it.  You can do this at home, but it might be worth your time to take it to a machine shop....they're usually excellent at doing that kind of thing and won't make mistakes.

If *that* doesn't work, then you can always cut off the parts that you're able to, and replace the crankarm, crankset, and/or bottom bracket.   That's really a last resort....I'm sure you can get the bolt out before having to do that.   When you assemble the new parts, be sure to use some antiseize compound or good quality grease on the bolt threads.  That will make it much happier next time.

Good luck...hope it turns out ok!   :o)
