Question:

How do I get my dogs to stop eating the cat food?

I have 2 dogs and a cat, and their food is always out but my cats food was always on a little table so my dogs couldn't get to it. But recently I noticed my cat can barely jump on to the table (he's very old) so I started putting his food on the ground. But now I can't get the dogs to stop eating his food, and I don't want to keep using the table because I'm not always around to pick my cat up and put him on it.

Any suggestions?

  1. My female cat CAN jump she is just stubborn and does not like to do it so to stop my dog from eating her food, my partner built a zig zag walkway out of wood up to the side- so she can walk up it and the dog cannot reach the food? sort of like a ladder but if you cannot build something give you cant some boxes or a chair or stool to jump onto 1st so it means he has 2 small jumps instead of 1 big one?

    Hope this helps

  2. ok put the cat in a room with it food close the door for 30mins then put the food up till the cat get hunry

  3. You could possibly get a box and cut a hole small enough for only the cat to fit in, and keep his food in there.

  4. Put your cats food on a counter or table where the dog can't reach it.

  5. try to put them out side with there food and leave the in side let the cat eat and when he is done empty the extras back where it came from and put it away let the dogs in and theres no food except theres.

  6. just feed him twice a day when you are there let him eat his fill in the morning and at night in a few days he will adjust and eat enough to maintain his health

  7. just feed him cat food only for a while and then when he gets dog food again he will appreciate it

  8. Well, you can't really stop the dogs eating the catfood if they can access it easily.  You would have to put the catfood somewhere that the dogs can't get it.

  9. Well you shouldn't free feed a cat - it can lead to obesity.  So don't leave his food out all the time.  Adult cats should only be fed twice a day.  When you do put down his food put the dogs outside or put the cat in a room behind a door or use a baby gate.

I have this same problem with my dog.  I put their bowls up on a table and on the dryer but obviously that isn't an option for you if he'd elderly and can't easily jump up.  Plus you wouldn't want him to end up hurting himself if he tried to jump and didn't make it.

  10. You could purchase a pet gate with a small opening in it. Just an example, this is the first site I found for such a thing:

    http://www.futurepets.com/cgi-bin/FULLPR...

"Keeps your rambunctious and larger pets out of forbidden areas while allowing access for your cat to get to his litter or food. Great way to keep the dog out of the litter pan or to separate small pets' feeding areas from large pet food bowls."

Then just choose a separate room where you can keep your cat's food and the dogs won't be able to get to it (unless if they can jump over the gate so be sure to check sizes and consider your dog's agility.)

  11. Feed them in different places or at different times.  The dogs aren't gonna just stop eating the cat food if it's out there for them.
