I have 2 Tropical fish, and everytime I clean the tank, it just seems to get dirty again so quickly! How often should I be cleaning it?

  1. Buy a filter, this will help filter all the dirt/pieces of old food or pieces of plants, etc.

Clean your tank every 2 weeks or so (depending on the size of the tank)

If you are feeding too much to your fish, that means more waste (more leftover food not being eaten, and when food goes in the mouth, it comes back out, which means more waste too from the back end)

The more fish you have more waste. If you need to, if this is really bothering you, then a larger tank would help too.

Also - you could change some water every week in between tank cleaning.

If you don't mind your plants being eaten you can also get some snails or an algae eater or something.

Hope this helps! Good luck. Cleaning is definitely the downside to fish-keeping !

  2. Invest in a larger tank if it's getting filthy that quickly. Also, you may have to get more filtration, and either change what you feed or cut back on the feedings. We had the same problem with some of our fish, we were feeding processed foods (flakes/pellets) and the tank would get so disgusting within a few days. After I switched to a mainly frozen food diet, the problem was solved.

  3. Work on keeping the tank running smootly, with just regular partial water changes. Each week clean the glass, vacum the gravel and remove about 25% of the water. Top up with clean treated tap water. Just rinse out the filter in old tank water.

If you still get problems with cloudy water you need to work out what else is going on. Green water is algae caused by too much light and not enough water changes. Grey haze will be due to bacteria or diatoms, generally if the water is out of balance.

If you completely clean out the tank you end up with 100%new water, filters loosing cycle and the tank generally not running smoothly.

Partial cleans and water changes are the way to go.

  5. Depending on the size of your tank, you should be doing water changes every 7-14 days..........
