He will probably run on his own eventually. As hamsters are nocturnal he is most likely to run in it at night when you're sleeping, so you won't notice. If you spin the wheel slowly a few times (especially if he's in it) then he may pick up on what he's supposed to do.

However it is also possible that he doesn't like using the wheel, in which case you won't really be able to make him. It won't be a problem if he doesn't use it, as long as he doesn't get overweight

I WANTED A BUFF HAMSTER SO I TRIED TO BUT A PLASTIC COVERING ON THE SIDE OF THE WHEEL AND TRAP HIM IN THERE....I BUT FOOD HANGING IN FRONT OF HIM AND HE STARTED TO RUN...MY HAMSTER IS SO BUFF...DUH!!

AFTER I SEE HIM GETTING TIRED I LET HIM OUT AND DRINK WATER AND GIVE HIM HIS SPECIAL TREAT...HES HAPPY =]

hamsters sleep mostly during the day thats why you might see him with fat cheeks he saves food so he does not do much during the day but at night is when they do all the running and eating so he prob is using it thats how my hamster did it!

It will if it wants to. Hamsters are nocternal, he is probably running during the night. Just make sure the wheel can turn with ease and nothing is in the way.

Plus you might be freaking him out if you are staring at him. Just leave him alone to feel comfortable in his evrionment.

pick him up and put him on it and spin it a few times very lightly keep doing this and your hamster should get the hang of it
