Question:

How do I get my hamsters trust back?

I've nearly had my little dwarf hamster for a month. He is still quite panicky at some times, but he can be good once in a while. Yesterday I was trying to teach him the trick "stand". so I used a little banana chip, and I held it above his head and said "stand". I guess he was a little over excited, because he leaped up and bit my finger. He was biting it so hard, that he hung on when I lifted my hand up. The only thing I could do to make him stop was pull him of my hand and drop him back in the cage. Obviously, after you drop a hamster, they don't trust that you can hold him. Most of those training methods I know, involve you putting your hand in the cage. Well, every time I put my hand in the cage he bites me. The one way he doesn't bite me is when I am taking him out of his plastic hamster ball. But normally when I hold him he wriggles around trying to get out and poos and pees on me. How do I tame him and get his trust?

  1. wow first of all everything a hamster does is out of instinct and they hav a remeberance span of like two minutes so its not like he is ever going to have trust in you so yea

  2. play with them ALOT

  3. Try to put a treat iin your hand and see if he will climb on your hand, for the pee and poo thing it means its nervous, all animals can sense fear, and when they sense yours they think that they have something to worry about as well. you should confidently but gently pick him up, slowly not to startle him. if you continue to do this, and not hurt him or otherwise make him unhappy - he'll begin to realize that it isn't a threat when there's a hand in his cage. good luck! also, hamster bites aren't too bad at all, and if he does ever bite you, make sure you don't throw him right back in the cage. he'll learn from that experience and continue to bite you so that he can get back to his home. if he does bite, just act as if it does not phase you. if he thinks it doesn't work, he probably won't do it again.hes proberly like that because you dont play or pick him up regular they are a animale so they go by there nature when he was a baby u should of played with him alot from there then he will get used to it usally hamsters are very social but some are not, you should check out my hamster website:http://my-ham-dolce.piczo.com/?cr=2
