Question:

How do I get my one year old daughter to eat?

My daughter just turned one. For the last week, she has had the diarrhea, and within just the last couple of days, she has gotten a little fever a couple of times.

With her eating, she will not eat anything that is good for her. All she seems to want is foods with sugar on them, or nothing at all.

She LOVES bananas, yet, she will not eat them. I made her some toast last night with all fruit jam. She would not eat the parts that had no jam on them.

What can I do to get her to eat foods that are good for her. I feel bad because I do not want her to starve by not feeding her till she is hungry enough to eat anything...I am afraid she will not get to that point. Did her birthday cake mess her up? Which she had in June.

My pastor, who is a Nurse Practitioner, said that she has tasted food with spice and now that is all she will eat and there is nothing I can do except put healthy seasonings on her foods. I do not think that can be the only solution.

Any though

  1. The best thing that you can do is NOT give in to her wanting sugary foods.

Its obvious that she is sick, so her diet might get thrown off a bit, but if you give into the sugary foods she knows that eventually she'll get them. When she is hungry, she'll eat.

Might I suggest some plain chicken? (no skin or something, just like boiled,..very plain, no fat) sometimes chicken and rice help with diarrhea. ONLY IF you've introduced this before. Introducing something new now while shes sick might not be good.

She will eat healthy foods as long as you dont give into her wants as far as sugary foods go.

ALSO this is a good time to call the doctor. Not only to consult him about the eating problem, but to also ask about her being sick.

  2. I like what just jess said. you need to only offer he healthy foods. And give her starchy foods to bring her stools together, try some sweet potatoes. keep offering her the healthy foods, it takes about 15 tries to get accustomed to the taste. Who's in charge you or her? My son is only offered a sugary treat after he's eaten his something healthy.

  3. If she's had diarhhea and fever she's probably craving sugary stuff to get some energy back.  You could try putting a bit of sugar in her water bottle.  Have you tried giving her stewed apple?  Just chop up an apple and put it in a saucepan or microwave with a little water until it's mushy - really quick and easy and tastes sweet.  Plain yoghurt with honey usually works.  Try mashing sweet veges like carrots and pumpkin - even add a bit of honey to them. They go through phases so just try and sneak good things to her in the form of something else - you sometimes get lucky!  For a while I was draining a tin of chickpeas and giving the kids a little bowl at a time under the pretence that they were nuts - I couldn't believe it worked.  Good luck!
