Question:

How do I get my pool water to clear up?

I have a 10x30 easy set pool. I have had it set up since Tuesday and today is Friday. On Wednesday, the pool water was yellow, so my boyfriend bought algaecide. We added that and it didn't do anything, so my boyfriend bought 4 in 1 shock. We added that last night, and now the pool water is like a cloudy yellow color. I put a new filter in last night, and by this morning, it was brown. Keep in mind, I have well water and there is a lot of iron in it. How do I fix my pool water problem?

  1. Go to super store, LOWES, HOME DEPOT, local pool store, or Ace Hardware.

    Get metal remover.

You can also take a sample of the water to ACE or pool store.

If you know you have iron, use the iron remover!

PUTTING TABS WHERE THE FILTER GOES can cause an EXPLOSION.

Tablets should ONLY go into a tablet dispenser.

I have seen these explosions, not pretty.

  2. Use clorine and if nothing is working, change the water.

  3. Use chlorine in the water. Most pool supply places have it.

  4. 1st thing, get a water testing kit - Home Depot, Lowes, Wal Mart all carry them. I like the the strips not the liquid kits - they are easier to use. They need to at least test: free chol., pH and tot alk.

While water chemistry is complex, there are a couple main things to keep track of:

free chlorine levels (main chem to keep water clean)

pH level (if pH isn't neutral chlorine doesn't work well, gets used up quickly etc)

total alkalinity (or stabilizer, greatly helps the chemical balance. Without, your pool water balance will fluctuate wildly and drive you crazy.)

I'm not sure what's going on (many causes possible) but I have well water too and lots of iron, it does take days to condition the water in spring. You need to get your water in line chemically before you do ANYTHING else. Also, if your water is perfect you don't need algaecide, but in practice that's hard to do.

There are many sites that help explain all this but they also can be confusing! Heres one:

  5. Try Chlorine.

  6. you need to with put some chlorine in or shock your pool everyday.
