Question:

How do I get my roommate to stop smoking inside???

Here's what I've tried so far

1. Drew a no smoking sign on the markerboard

2. Wrote, 'Please don't smoke inside. The walls are thin.' (This is when she lit up at 7am)

3. Wrote, 'this place smells like a bar.'

4. Asked her to her face to please stop.

Problem is, she still smokes inside when I'm not home. The air conditioning blows it directly into my room so when I come home and open the door to my room it's like stepping into an ashtray. We live in a high rise with no balcony, so I know it's inconvenient for her, but I feel like I can't even sleep in my own bed. Any suggestions?

  1. She doesnt care.  Find someone else.

  2. same thing is going on with my son; he quit a couple of years ago, but roommate smokes.  He waits till my son leaves the room, which is better than before, but still won't smoke outside.  It probably won't change unless you change roommates and advertise for a non-smoker.

  3. im a smoker but i totally get u. i dont even smoke inside because i have pets and i dont even want them to have to smell it! as a non smoker she needs to respect ur health and your rights to have a smoke free zone..nothing worse than the smell of stale smoke in an apartment especially in your bedroom.  I would tell her straight..she gonna have to smoke outside because its making you sick..it will affect your health otherwise..and its disrespectful if she doesnt realise that. Its common courtesy...my partner doesnt smoke and i always keep my distance for that exact reason..good luck

  4. Simple: talk to her. Do not tell her in her face to stop smoking in the house. But sit down together, have a nice cuppa with cakes and explain to her why you find it so difficult when she smokes in the house. Talk to each other like two adults: listen to whatever she has to say and see if you can find a solution/middle way or something.

Maybe shutting down the airco and opening a window instead when she wants to smoke a cigarette would be an option??

  5. It might be time to get another room mate or move out and get a nonsmoking roommate

  6. You should find another roomate, otherwise you will find life at home to be very stressful.

I smoke but never inside, I had a roomate who sounds similar to yours.  I tried to establish a non-smoking rule for months but it never worked.

I'm a smoker myself and found the situation very stressful so I know where you are coming from.

  7. If you want to live in a non-smoking environment, you have to make that clear before you move in. Now, you can't really ask her to change her behavior. If it bothers you, you need to get a new roommate. (In the case of a couple the situation is generally reversed.)

  8. Get a superfan and place it in your room and install a firealarm and laugh when she lights one up.

Blow the fumes away, get air refreshers....

and well... she could be lighting one up while you're freshening up the place and well.. who knows?

  9. Could you have asked this question BEFORE either of you moved in?

If not, I think you both should learn to compromise -- and that would be whatever you both feel comfortable with.

    Other than that.............MOVE!
