How do I get my router to work with my modem?

Ok heres the situation.

My computer is hooked up directly to the cable modem. I want to go wireless with my laptop and everytime I hook up my cable modem to the router and then to my desktop the internet never works?

Help?

You probably haven't set up the router right. Read the instruction manual and check for things you might need to install or set up.

you have to reset, or unplug the cable modem, then do the same to the router.  It refreshes the IP addresses.  modem first then the router.

It is possible you didn't set up the router properly. Check the settings as the other person already mentioned above. To be able to go wireless you need a wireless router and secure the wireless connection. Because its wireless the router is online and anyone could connect to it with a wireless device if it's opened. When I configured my home network I had to play around with the settings in order for it to work properly.
