How do I get my tax back?

Hi. I am a student who worked for 2 weeks at the end of June. I was not given a P38S form to fill in, and therefore have ended up paying tax through the PAYE system. What do I have to do to claim my tax back. All I have is the payslips I have been sent by the company saying how much I have earned and therefore how much I have been taxed.

What should I do...

  1. Are you still working there? Or possibly going back if the opportunity arises and that they still have you on payroll? If you have left, you should have received P45. You may need to chase this up with employer. That is your legal evidence of tax deduction, and it is unlikely at this stage in the tax year you can get a refund without it. Payslips aren't legal documents, and cannot be used for repayment purposes.

If you are likely to work there again, ask employer for form P38S if you are working at vacation time only. Employer should then make refund to you with next pay packet. If you are part-time, even if work spasmodic throughout year, employer will need to give you form P46 to sign.

If you have left, download form P50 from www.hmrc/p50, complete, send to tax office with form P45, and request refund.

  2. If you have left the employment in June, you will not get a P60. You should have been given a P45 when your employment finished. You can send this P45 to your tax office with for P50 if you are not going to work again in this tax year (6 April 08 - 5 April09).

If you will work again before April 09, then you should keep your P45 until you start your new job as the new employer will need this. You could then make a claim at the end of the year to see if you have overpaid any tax.

You can find your tax office using http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals...

  3. You will need to wait till the end of the financial year and get your P60, it is illegal for an employer to not give this to you, i warn you now i was in a similar postion after i left uni and was working for half a year, it took 7months to get £550 back!

When you get you P60 (around April 2009) Contact the Inland Revenue

    Good Luck

  4. Contact your local tax office. Normally there is a number on your payslip if not try the hmrc website. However I think you normally have to wait untill the end of the tax year to get your money back (5th April 09). You send inland revenue your details of earning for the year and they calculate if you have overpaid or underpaid and they send you a cheque.
