i got these two gerbils maybe about 2weeks ago-one LOOKS female (spotted lilac)-because the other has noticable genital(HE is definatley a HE) the girl is named Rayna the boy Jerico. The boy is rather bigger than the (hopefully) girl. I was told by the shop owner they were of the opposite s*x. I noticed Jerico thumping a few times and i heard that was like a mating call or something. He mounts on Rayna but she goes and rolls over on her back. I was also told they wer most likely only about 9 weeks old..but im skeptical they will mate at this rate...i also read up that she goes into heat every 5 days or so...i need help...

please? anyone who can help me? My girl is frustrating me...i think its a girl...it doesnt have anything "protruding".... =/ i mean is it normal for a dude gerbil to do that to a DUDE gerbil?? the boy seems to be getting bigger and the girl sometimes looks fat and sometimes doesnt...PLEASE HELP ME (I KNOW JERICO IS DEFANITELY A GUY) <=]

  1. Trust me. If it was a boy, you'd know it was a boy. If they're only 9 weeks old they probably aren't going to mate yet. But gerbils are like rabbits, if they're together, they'll get pregnant eventually.

  2. Well I had 2 hamsters and the male would always have the urge to do it. Usually the nipples of the female will start to swell and if you hold the female she might try to bite trying to protect her future children. I don't know how to make them mate but they usually do it when you least expect it. It could take only a couple seconds to an hour to make the female pregnant. When you are definitely sure the female is pregnant... separate the two of them because the male might try to hurt the female and hurt her young. Also the male will usually want to do it again and again no matter if the female is pregnant or not. So keep them separate unless you want more babies.

  3. tAPE THE MALE ON TOP OF THE FEMALE OR NOOO BETTER GLUE HIM!!XDDD

  4. dim the lights, play some barry white and give them some privacy.

maybe an eye dropper with some red wine.

    :)

  5. you can really make them u just have to wait, and see when they are ready

  6. I would highly suggest stopping that.

She is too young to breed yet, and he will end up hurting her.

Gerbils mate and them mate again IMMEDIATELY after the babies are born, and then IMMEDIATELY after those babies are born, etc. It will make the female weak and sick and shorten her life.

    IF you insist:

Do you have a small animal vet and funding in case the pregnancy or birth goes wrong? Or if one severely injures the other?

Do you know both of their medical histories? Pet store gerbils should not be bred, as you don't know their family history with defects or injuries. The gerbils you have now may even be inbred.

If you got them from a breeder, call and ask the breeder's advice.

Are you planning to keep the babies or adopt them out?

If you are planning on keeping them, you need to get enough living spaces for them- new cages, etc.

If you are going to adopt them out, you should have enough homes BEFORE the babies are conceived.

    How old is the female?

If she gives birth and decides she isn't ready, she will eat her babies, much like a hamster.

The male needs to either not be housed with her during the pregnancy, or removed IMMEDIATELY after the babies are born, or he will impregnate her within minutes or hours or birth, that's how gerbils work.

Do you know enough not to try and change the bedding for a week or so after the babies are born, so as not to upset the mom?

That is a lot to think about and do research into.

Hope it helps your decision. :]

  7. Maybe you should do more research and rethink your desire to want them to reproduce, there are already lots of homeless pets. Why purposely bring more into the world? No offense, just curious. And I'm also guessing 9 weeks is a little young to start mating.... but I don't know to much about gerbils.
