Question:

How do I get noticed at work?

I posted this before, but I'll try a new category, because it got no results. I need to find a way to get noticed as a good worker (to gain more hours and respect from managers). And also stay busy in a slow restaurant.

I work at a fast food place. It is very slow right now. I am 16 and just started less than a month ago. We are supposed to be constantly working, finding something to do. If there is nobody in the entire restaurant, I have to find something to do.

I always clean bathrooms, stock and shine napkin dispensers, wipe down tables, stock anything that needs stocking, occasionally even clean the play scape. I also sweep and mop as necessary (usually at the end of the night). I empty trash, clean the windows, and wash/put a

way dishes. Still, sometimes, everything is done, and I can't find anything to do.

If you have experience, what else should I do? Or customers, what do you look for in a restaurant?

I can't stand when it is slow and I have nothing to do, or I get cut early for not having anything to do. I want to work my whole shift.

Also, how do I avoid being sent home first?

  1. Go outside to the busiest street, next to the restaurant and wave at people

  2. Unfortunately in the restaurant/ fast food industry it is a way of life that people get sent home early when it is slow. They usually go by seniority or who has been on their shift the longest. So not much you can do about that.

If there are others that can cover the floor then go to the stock room with permission and get in good order. They usually get messed up and things out of order quickly.

If you have not been trained in all the different areas of the business see if during down time they can cross train you. It looks good to management and may help you in the long run.

It looks like you covered everything else.

If hours become to scare you may just need to look for another job.

  3. If you've done all there is to do, what else can you do?  I would suggest finding a new job, a place that is always busy, that's your best bet.  I'm like you don't like a slow boring job, so I work for really busy places.  Good Luck!
