we just got 2 really cute parakeets on fathers day, so im just wondering, what are some tips to help them get used to us and let them sit on our fingers and shoulders. They let us get close to them and almost touch them but then they run/fly away.

  1. You don't say but do you keep them in the same cage? If you do they will only tolerate you. They have each other. They would prefer a bigger crowd but they will always choose one bird over a bunch of people. They do best as pets when raised by themselves. They are very social so they are pretty easy to tame down when alone. Just give them a week or so to get accustomed to the new surroundings and personalities. They should  be separated from each other and moved as far apart as they can be in the house. They will learn to step  up first. Use a dowel rod and press it up against his breast right where his legs meet is body. Don't try to lift up to hard, just put pressure and gently lift when you do say  UP in  a firm voice.   This is considered a base command. Once the bird learns to step up on the dowel you can take him and use your finger while it is on the dowel. It just takes persistence and patience. Lots and lots of patience. Never try to work with the bird if he absolutely isn't in to it. Never let the training time go past 15 minutes. good luck!

  2. Keep them where most of the daily action occurs and don't be afraid to make noise around them. Handle them like crazy. At first they don't want to come near you but they'll warm up to you if you keep trying. Don't grab them or force them to do anything. Put some food in your hand and try to coax them over. What ever you do don't grab them. They hate that and see it as agression.

  4. Just leave them they will get close to you sooner or later, feed them, and if they don't let them out of the stage for a while. :) it will work. Good Luck

  5. well you said you just got them on fathers day. that is now 2-3 days in their new home. it takes time for them to adjust to a new home. give it a few more weeks. don't make sudden moves or do things to scare them. offer fresh fruit and veggies every day. you have to earn the birds trust and some times keets are too nervous for being tamed. it will just take time.

    Best wishes! ~♥~
