Question:

How do I get out of a magazine contract?

the company is Reader's Source. They call you on the phone, they called my husband and dupped him into a five year contract for magazines at $40 a month. Who would pay $2,400 for five magazine subcriptions? He thought that he was renewing a subscription that he once had. He was tricked by trained proffesional sales people that mixed up words. When any sane person does the math, a typical subcription through the little cards inside magazines you save like 80% Thats most of the time like $20 for one year. He is being charged $120 a year for each magazine. That is robbery. I called them, they refuse to terminate his contract. My checking account has paid them for two months so far and I have yet to recieve anything. They claim it can take up to four months to recieve a magazine. Is this worth fighting? Are they lieing to me when telling me that they can not terminate this contract? Should I just suck it up and pick the most expensive magazines they have????

  1. It's probably more like a subscription than a contract.  Write a letter stating that you are canceling your subscription to whatever magazine(s), effective whatever date.  State that payments to them are no longer authorized as of whatever date.  Keep a copy for yourself and send it Certified, Return Receipt.  That way you have proof that they received your letter.

Then, call your bank or credit card company and let them know that payments to that company are no longer authorized.  If the seller continue to withdraw funds from your financial institution, call the bank and dispute the charges.

Next, call the BBB in your area and file a complaint.  Check with your area's Consumer Protection group, probably run by the State.  File a complaint with them, too.

  2. you have a good argument.  They do not have the right to say no when you ask to terminate the contract.  I would take this to the courts if can not resolve this soon.

  3. Its a contract! Welcome to the USA! Your stuck like Chuck

  4. Did your husband sign anything. If not, it's no contract.

Move your money from that bank account and close the account -   Make it as difficult as possible for that company to get it's money. They know their practices are shady...

All magazines must allow you to cancel - it is governed by the ABC...Audit Bureau of Circulation.

  5. They did the same thing to me, but I got the trick before giving them the card number, so I think the only thing you can do is to close your account or something like that, or maybe with some consumer agency, I wish you good luck with this.

  6. Call the Attorney General consumer protection line.  They can probably give you some good tips for free.
