How do I get paint smears off my unvarnished wood floor?

Hubby and I recently took up carpet in the spare room , I was thinking the floor was probably ruined under the carpet but it turns out that it's really in good shape. There doesn't appear to be any varnish or polyurethane on the floor and there are a few paint smears that are fairly faint .....what can I do to remove the paint smears besides sanding the whole floor?

Paint thinner and "very fine" grade sandpaper.
