Hi, I am going to Costa Rica at the end of July (Osa Peninsula). I'm not super active, although I walk a mile every day and ride my bike on flat land about 5-10 miles every other day. Plus, I'm not exactly in good shape (is round a shape? :o) Will I be OK on moderate trails? Also, how do I get myself ready for hiking (I have 6 weeks!)

  1. dude...

if you go hiking with a guide? he will wait for you. unless if you want it to be like a competition

  2. You had better break in your rain gear, especially the footwear.  New footwear, especially when wet will ruin your vacation the first hiking day.  The Osa will be very wet in July so pack plenty of socks and 2 pairs of shoes.  Break both pairs in before you start using them here full time, this will also help toughen your feet as needed for the shoes.

Start walking now, maybe wearing a pound or 2 of chest weights.  Do not use leg weights, they ruin your natural stride and develop muscles you do not normally use for walking.  Make sure your walks go up and down hill.

Again, be prepared for being soaked most of the time.
