  1. You need to contact there buying departments of the individual store that you would like to carry your product and see what you need to do to submit a product (different companies require different procedures to introduce new items), follow there directions to a tee for consideration, some require you to send a sample, some require a face to face meeting, so a single answer can not be given, good luck in your pursuit/

  2. Compare your product to others and where they are sold. You basically have to convince that yours

is better than theirs. You can hand them spreadsheets all day long. An old saying: " The proof is in the pudding"

Choose what retailers you would like to deal with. I suggest 5 outlets ( 2 major names and 3 minor ones). Notify those retailers you are doing the same in several different stores. Have pamphelts/brochures/ any information which will not only help the retailer and sales personnel, but also the consumer when

they have questions.  Request an area in their store ( a booth/shelf ) and do a test run sales on your product.

That limits you to a small amount to inventory.  It also gives that store less to worry about. Tell the store you will have a time limit on this test run. Say 2-5 weeks. Keep up on this! Merchandice moves quickly at times.

Let them know when your test is done you will have a formal meeting to discuss having your product(s) in their store. When it is finished; take all your information and hire an agency. Let them do your contract bidding.
