  1. There are commercial Japanese beetle traps, which are a lure with a bag that hangs underneith.  They are pretty effective and I use several, and you can get them at hardware stores, walmart, home improvement places, and sometimes even drug or dollar stores.

I also pick the beetles off and toss them into a bucket of soapy water.  This is time consuming but will get a handle on them.  You can try planting some Mexican shell flowers, too.  They are an annual and the beetles love them, so it is a way you can lure them away from more valuable plants.

In the fall, if you are willing to use pesticide, you can get granules called Grub-X.  You spread it and it kills the grubs in the ground, those fat white grubs in the soil you find while digging are Japanese beetles in their larval stage.

Good luck, they are a horrible pest.

  2. It's too late for prevention this year - you need to use the bag traps.  They'll give you better results than spraying.

  3. Help is right, those things will eat up your whole garden. I grow a lot of vegetables including tomatoes and jalapenos - and Japanese Beetles provide us with problems everyear.

Unfortunately, I do not think there is much to do aside from pesticides honestly. And i try to go as organic as possible. Very bad nuisance.
